THE VESSEL This exceptionally well-maintained 2007 Mainship 34 Pilot Sedan represents a rare opportunity. She is a proven coastal cruiser with low engine hours that has been continuously improved, thoughtfully upgraded, and meticulously documented by an owner who clearly understood what it takes to keep a boat in genuinely turnkey condition.
The Mainship Pilot series earned its reputation as one of the most practical and capable cruising platforms in its size class. Single-engine simplicity, a semi-displacement hull that delivers both efficiency and seakeeping, a shallow 3'3" draft that opens up gunkholing and thin-water cruising, and a protected pilothouse layout that extends the cruising season in both directions. The Pilot 34 is the boat serious cruisers choose when they want real capability without the complexity and expense of a larger vessel.

For Southern California cruising, the configuration is close to ideal. The single Yanmar is widely considered the preferred choice over the twin-engine alternative. Engine room access is dramatically better for an owner-operator, and the fuel economy matters on a Channel Islands run. The enclosed pilothouse with solid glass and hardtop protection is what separates the Sedan from the open express models, and it earns its keep on a windy afternoon return from Santa Cruz or Anacapa through a choppy Santa Barbara Channel. With a 3'3" draft, she slips easily into shallow anchorages and maneuvers comfortably in narrow local fairways.

What sets this particular example apart is the record. Nearly every system aboard has been serviced, rebuilt, upgraded, or replaced within the last several years, with receipts and logbook entries to prove it. The electronics suite is modern and current. The cooling system has been comprehensively overhauled. The deck and gelcoat work completed in 2026 brought the exterior to a standard well above what buyers typically find in a boat of this vintage. This is not a project boat or a deferred-maintenance story. It is a cruise-ready vessel with the paperwork to back it up.

BROKER'S SEA TRIAL NOTES I sea trialed this vessel at length with the owner prior to listing her, and she performed exceptionally. Running directly into moderate two to three foot seas, she was stable, tracked beautifully, and handled the conditions with no drama. The sharp entry of the hull design does exactly what it should in a head sea. Engine temperatures stayed normal throughout, with no exhaust smoke at any point in the run. Helm response was excellent through lock-to-lock testing, and tight rotations using the bow thruster were clean and controlled. Shifting was normal with the propeller digging in deep for instant response. The generator runs strong. The Raymarine electronics performed flawlessly, as did the trim tabs. The gelcoat is mirror-like across the entire boat, and the stainless steel railings and fixtures throughout are notably clean. This is a beautifully maintained Mainship 34 cared for by owners who have clearly loved her for years, arguably the cleanest example currently available.

BUILDER HERITAGE Mainship built over 10,000 vessels across four decades under the Luhrs Marine Group, a family boatbuilding operation with roots dating to 1936. The Pilot series, introduced in the late 1990s, was arguably Mainship's finest achievement. Drawing on downeast and lobster-boat design traditions, the Pilots paired a semi-displacement hull with single-engine diesel simplicity and a protected pilothouse. The result is efficient, seaworthy, and genuinely all-weather capable. Mainship Pilots hold their value notably well, and the reason is straightforward. They were designed and built to be used hard and used often.

BUILD QUALITY & CONSTRUCTION The hull is molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic with coring, and the decks, cabin, and cockpit employ similar cored sandwich construction, laminated and bonded to the hull with overlapping joints that are bonded, sealed, and mechanically fastened. All below-waterline through-hulls are bronze with bronze valves, the correct and durable approach.
The semi-displacement hull form is the heart of the boat's appeal. It runs efficiently at economical cruising speeds while retaining speed in reserve, and the shallow 3'3" draft opens up thin-water cruising that deeper-draft boats simply cannot reach.

LAYOUT & ACCOMMODATIONS The Pilot 34 layout is a study in efficient use of space, purpose-built for comfortable cruising for a couple with room for guests.

PILOTHOUSE & HELM

The protected pilothouse is the command center and the heart of the boat, with excellent visibility in all directions, comfortable for long watches, and genuinely usable in weather that would drive an open-helm boat off the water. The hardtop provides full overhead protection. Handhold safety poles were custom fabricated and installed in 2019, mounted to both roof and rail, with additional horizontal handholds running under the roof along the walkway to the foredeck, a thoughtful safety upgrade that makes moving about the boat underway notably more secure. This is the feature that distinguishes the Sedan from the open express models, and on a windy Channel crossing it is the difference between enduring the run and enjoying it.

MAIN CABIN

The main cabin features a dinette to starboard with table that converts to a berth, and the galley to port. Bright, functional, and comfortable, with the electrical panels conveniently located at the aft starboard bulkhead. Air conditioning and reverse-cycle heating serve the entire boat, making this a genuine year-round cruising or liveaboard platform.

The cockpit features a transom door for easy boarding and a cockpit shower. The port side rear stern deck was completely rebuilt in 2026, repaired, replaced, reinstalled, and re-gelcoated with new non-skid flooring, along with the rear stern hatch. Three rod holders were installed in the rail in 2024, and a new thru-hull was installed for a potential bait tank. A raw water washdown serves the foredeck.

MECHANICAL & SYSTEMS
ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN

Power is a single Yanmar 6LYA-STP turbocharged diesel rated at 370 horsepower, with freshwater cooling via heat exchanger, driving through a ZF 220 transmission at 3.00:1 reduction. The propeller shaft is 1-1/2" stainless steel alloy running through a PSS dripless shaft seal to a conventional bronze shaft log with cutless bearing, turning a four-blade 18" bronze propeller. Engine stringers are glassed formed with flexible-type mounts. Ventilation is both passive and forced. With approximately 1,285 hours on the Yanmar, this vessel has notably low time for a 2007 boat, averaging well under 70 hours per season. Combined with the documented 1,000-hour major service completed in September 2023 and the comprehensive cooling system overhaul finished in February 2026, the engine is both lightly used and thoroughly cared for. Owner-tested performance under load in moderate seas returns a comfortable 15 knot cruise at 3,000 RPM, with a top end of 19.5 knots at 3,500 RPM. That is a genuinely useful spread for Channel Islands work, giving an economical passage speed with meaningful reserve when weather or schedule calls for it. Single-engine diesel installations of this type are prized by cruisers for exactly the reasons this boat demonstrates: simplicity, fuel economy, fewer systems to maintain, and easier engine room access. For an owner-operator, the practical advantage is access. A single installation leaves genuine working room in the engine room, which makes routine service something you do yourself rather than something you schedule.

BOW THRUSTER

Factory bow thruster makes docking and close-quarters maneuvering straightforward, particularly valuable in a single-engine boat.

Single-engine simplicity, a semi-displacement hull that delivers both efficiency and seakeeping, a shallow 3’3″ draft that opens up gunkholing and thin-water cruising, and a protected pilothouse layout that extends the cruising season in both directions.

With a 3’3″ draft, she slips easily into shallow anchorages and maneuvers comfortably in narrow local fairways.

BROKER’S SEA TRIAL NOTES I sea trialed this vessel at length with the owner prior to listing her, and she performed exceptionally.

The Pilot series, introduced in the late 1990s, was arguably Mainship’s finest achievement.

The semi-displacement hull form is the heart of the boat’s appeal. It runs efficiently at economical cruising speeds while retaining speed in reserve, and the shallow 3’3″ draft opens up thin-water cruising that deeper-draft boats simply cannot reach.

The propeller shaft is 1-1/2″ stainless steel alloy running through a PSS dripless shaft seal to a conventional bronze shaft log with cutless bearing, turning a four-blade 18″ bronze propeller.
